Frequently asked questions
Questions about tuition?
From finding the right tutor to arranging lessons, here are answers to some of the questions families ask us.
Getting started
What happens when I first contact Parent Concern?
After your initial email or telephone call, Sara arranges an in-depth conversation about your child’s background, learning needs and what you hope tuition will help with. This might include schoolwork, confidence, social anxiety or your child asking for extra support.
How do you match my child with a tutor?
Sara knows the tutors’ backgrounds, subject expertise and experience. She considers your child’s needs, confidence and the kind of relationship that may help them learn. For in-person tuition, she also checks which tutors work in your area.
What ages and subjects do you support?
We support children and young people aged 5–18, across primary and secondary learning. You can explore the subjects and tutors on our tutors page.
Can you support children with SEND or an EHCP?
Yes. Our tutors have experience working with children with different learning needs, including SEND and EHCPs. Sara will talk through your child’s individual needs and any support already in place to help find a suitable tutor. We also support children of all learning abilities who need additional help or encouragement.
Lessons and progress
Can tuition help with confidence as well as schoolwork?
Yes. We support children who feel anxious, have low self-esteem or are finding a subject difficult. Some struggle to learn in busy, noisy classrooms. One-to-one support gives tutors time to understand each learner and build a positive relationship.
Where do lessons take place?
All primary lessons take place in person at the pupil’s home. Secondary tuition is predominantly online, with two tutors also offering in-person lessons at pupils’ homes in limited locations. Sara will discuss what is available for your child and your area.
How long are lessons, and how often should they take place?
Lesson lengths vary according to each child’s learning style and concentration. Sara and your tutor can discuss a suitable lesson length and frequency for your child.
How will I know how my child is progressing?
After each lesson, your tutor will give you feedback on what your child has been working on and how they are progressing. It’s also an opportunity to share anything you’ve noticed or ask questions, helping you and the tutor work together to support your child.
Practical arrangements
What happens if the tutor isn’t the right fit?
We offer four paid trial sessions so that the family and tutor can get to know one another and check that the relationship is a good fit for both. Please discuss any concerns with Sara so you can talk through the next steps.
How do you check your tutors?
All tutors have up-to-date enhanced DBS checks. Where a check needs renewing, Sara arranges this through uCheck and coordinates the required documents. Tutors also provide two professional references. Sara personally contacts the referees and obtains written references covering the tutor’s suitability and experience, how long the referee has known them and in what capacity.
What support do you offer with behavioural strategies?
Sara offers a one-hour parent guidance session using the 1, 2, 3 Magic counting approach for children aged three and over. You practise the technique together and receive practical guidance, reward charts and emailed instructions to use at home. Find out more on our behavioural strategies page or contact Sara to discuss your family’s needs.
What happens if we need to cancel or reschedule a lesson?
Please give a full 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel a lesson. Contact your tutor to discuss any changes to the arrangements.
Do we need to commit to a set number of lessons?
The first four sessions are paid trial lessons. After that, parents need to give six weeks’ notice to stop lessons. Tuition can be arranged for term time only or throughout the year, excluding bank holidays.
